In a world where silent illnesses often go unnoticed until they cause great harm, the Rotary Club of Ikate took a stand — shining a light on diabetes and offering hope to those most at risk.

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving community health and wellness in Surulere, Lagos, our Club recently organized a Diabetic Awareness Workshop and Free Health Screening, culminating in the distribution of blood sugar testing kits to vulnerable seniors and low-income families.

The workshop was anchored by Dr. Arthur Okoye, a renowned podiatrist from the United Kingdom, whose deep expertise and compassionate approach enlightened participants on the dangers of untreated diabetes, proper foot care, and practical lifestyle adjustments to improve daily living. His engaging session turned complex medical insights into everyday wisdom — empowering attendees to take proactive steps toward better health.

The outreach, held in partnership with local healthcare professionals, educated residents on early detection, proper diet, and lifestyle management — critical tools in the fight against diabetes, a disease that now affects over 11% of Nigerian adults, according to the International Diabetes Federation.

“Many of our elderly citizens live with diabetes unknowingly, or lack the means to monitor their condition,” noted our Club President during her address. “By equipping them with simple tools like glucose monitors, we empower them to take control of their health — and that’s where real change begins.”

Participants received free blood sugar and blood pressure checks, as well as practical guidance on nutrition and exercise. The distribution of testing kits to seniors ensures that even after the workshop, the benefits continue — a clear example of Rotary’s commitment to sustainable impact.

This initiative aligns with Rotary International’s Area of Focus on Disease Prevention and Treatment, and reflects the spirit of “Service Above Self” that defines our mission at the Rotary Club of Ikate.

Through compassion and collaboration, we continue to bridge the gap in healthcare access for those who need it most — one screening, one senior, one community at a time.
